Altar - Any table or raised structure on which, during rituals and spellcastings, candles and incense are burned, tools and magick are kept, and offereings are made.
Amulet - A magickally charged object which deflects specific, usually negative energies. Generally, a protective object.
Athame - A knife with a double-edged blade used to cast a circle and direct and store energy raised in a ritual or spellcasting.
Balefire - A fire lit for magickal purposes, usually outdoors.
Bane - That which destroys life, which is poisonous, destructive, evil, and dangerous.
Besom - a Broom
Bolline - the white-handled knife, used in magick for practical things, cutting herbs, inscribing candles, etc.
Book of Shadows - A Wiccan book of rituals, spells and magickal lore.
Censer - A heat-proof container in which incense is smouldered.
Chalice - A sacred cup used to hold consecrated water or wine
To Charge - To infuse an object with Personal power.
Consecration - The act of making something sacred
Coven - a group of Wiccans, usually initiatory and led by one or two leaders.
Cowan - Among Witches, a non-Witch
Deosil - Clockwise, the direction of the sun
Eke-name - Also known as a Witch-name. Many Witches take on a secret name to be used only among brothers and sisters of the same path. When a Witch takes on a new name, he or she must be careful to choose one that harmonizes in one way or another with numerological name-numbers, birth-numbers, or runic number. A well-chosen name vibrates with that indiviual and directly links him or her to the Craft.
Elementals - Spirit-creatures that personify the four elements. Familiar - A Witch's pet.
Gray Magick - the art of practicing magick that isn't totally black, but isn't totally white either. Anything that borderlines black magick is considered gray magick.
Green Witch - A nickname for a fewmale or male Witch who is skilled in the art of wortcunning. The herb magick practiced by a Green Witch is called "the green Arts" or "green Magick."
Grimoire - A magickal workbook containing various spells, formulas, rituals, and incantations. The most famous grimoire is The Key of Solomon, which contains conjurations, prayers, detailed pentacles for each of the planets, and detailed commentaries on the nature of spirits invoked during ceremonies, witchcraft, and necromancy.
Handfasting - A Wiccan betrothal ceremony in which the hands of the bride and groom are tied together with a consecrated knotted cord to signify that they have been joined together in matrimonial union.
Handparting - A Wiccan ceremony that dissolves the marriage partnership of a man and a woman who are nonlegally married to each other.
Karma - The law of cause-and-effect that applies to all of our actions and their consquences in this life or in future incarnations.
Mojo Bag - True story, I didn't know what this was until I started to research for this website. Reading the name, I thought it was something Austin Powers had... anyway, it's a small leather, or flannel bag filled with a variety of magickal items such as herbs, stones, feathers, bones, and so forth, and carried or worn as a charm to attract or dispel certain influences. Much like the "Mojo" of Mr. Powers...
Neo-Paganism - The practice of modern-day Paganism; a contemporary and eclectic movement that aims to revive pre-Christian nature religion, Goddess worship, and mystery traditions by infusing them with modern concepts.
Poppet - A specially prepared herb-stuffed cloth doll that is used in sympathatic magick rituals to represent the person towards whom the spell is directed.
Scrying - The art and practice of interpreting the future, past, or present from images seen while gazing into a crystal ball, candle flame, pool of water, or gazing mirror; crystal-gazing; mirror-gazing
Solitary - A name used for the type of Witch who, either by circumstances or by his or her own choice, practice the Craft without a coven. Contrary to popular belief, 75% of all Wiccans are solitaries.
